The New York Times is reporting that Google, Twitter, Facebook and others have begun to limit the reach of fake news.
The Wall Street Journal says Google and Facebook have introduced “tweaks” that make it more difficult for fake news sites to get a large audience.

The rise of fake-news sites and stories: Since 2016, fake-story websites have grown significantly in number and reach.
In 2016, the total number of fake stories published on the web was just under 10 million, according to the Pew Research Center.
This year, the number is closer to 25 million.
According to a recent report by BuzzFeed, fake news accounts account for around 6 percent of the traffic to the sites BuzzFeed analyzed in the past year.
According a recent study from Vox, fake content accounts for nearly 10 percent of all news published on Facebook in the first half of 2018.
In fact, fake stories accounted for just under 3 percent of Facebook’s total traffic in the same period.
“While these are the same types of sites that we have seen before, they’re much more active, and much more of them have been targeted in ways that we haven’t seen before,” Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“They are much more prevalent, they have a lot more power.”
How fake stories are spread on social media: Fake stories are more likely to be shared on Twitter and Facebook, according the Pew report.
According in the Pew study, fake Facebook posts have a higher rate of shared than those that are genuine.
The Pew Research study also found that nearly 70 percent of people who shared fake news stories in the last month said they shared them on social platforms, and nearly 80 percent of those who shared a fake story on Facebook said they used it as a way to reach more people.
How to spot fake news on social networks: If you’re trying to find out more about the spread of fake content on social networking sites, you can use the Google Trend Lab, which tracks the share and likes of posts that are “fake.”
According to the report, the percentage of posts with a “100 percent positive” or “100% negative” response has steadily risen since 2016.
The data also shows that the percentage with a 100 percent positive response rose from 17 percent in 2016 to 23 percent in 2017.
How social media can help fight fake news: Facebook has implemented a new tool that it calls “Trending Topics,” which aims to flag posts that contain a lot of fake or misleading information.
The tool can flag posts containing misinformation about the flu, the Olympics, the NBA, the NFL, the Supreme Court, President Donald Trump, and more.
Facebook also has introduced a tool that automatically flags “misleading or misleading” content from social media platforms that contains false or misleading material.
If a post on Facebook has a “false positive” rate of at least 60 percent, the company will flag it as “fake news,” while posts with an “unfairly high rate of false positive” will be flagged as “misinformation.”

How it’s not just Facebook that’s cracking down on fake news and fake content: In March, Facebook introduced a feature that will flag posts with “fake content,” or posts that have been flagged by users as potentially misleading or false.
In March of this year, Facebook rolled out the feature to other popular social networks, including Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Microsoft.
The company also has a feature called “Faux News” that automatically detects and flags posts that “contain information that could be false or intentionally misleading.”
Facebook and Twitter aren’t the only companies fighting fake news this year: Earlier this year Facebook’s head of news and news product, Ryan Block, also spoke at a panel on fake-related issues at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
The conference featured several speakers, including former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who have been accused of misleading and defaming women.
